Astronomi İçin Antarktika’da Yer Seçimi

Year 2023, Volume: 4 Issue: 3 - Special Issue: Proceedings of the 22nd National Astronomy Congress, 303 - 305, 31.12.2023

Abstract

Site Selection for Astronomy in Antarctica

Year 2023, Volume: 4 Issue: 3 - Special Issue: Proceedings of the 22nd National Astronomy Congress, 303 - 305, 31.12.2023

Abstract

Antarctica is a valuable site in terms of astronomy due to the long dark nights with unusual conditions (low temperature, low humidity, etc.) and the possibility of continuous and sensitive observation due to the low land currents of the detectors in the arctic cold. It is one of the most attractive choices of astronomers and countries and decision makers who want to establish observatories. This situation has revealed the necessity of choosing a place for astronomy using geographic information systems and remote sensing. In this study, site selection was made for astronomical observatories in Antarctica using satellite data, remote sensing and model data such as cloud cover, precipitable water vapor, altitude and wind speed. The data was used from the astroGIS database and it is the most up-to-date data with a temporal resolution of at least 20 years and a spatial resolution of 1 km2.
