DETERMINATION OF SOME MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF LIMBA WOOD (TERMINALIN SUPERBA)
Abstract
In the study, bending strength, modulus of elasticity in bending, dynamic bending resistance and screw holding capacities of limba (Terminalin superba), a tropical wood species, were investigated depending on the tangential and radial directions. According to the results obtained, the bending resistance of limba wood in the tangential direction is 91.27 N/mm², and the bending resistance in the radial direction is 105.93 N/mm²; modulus of elasticity in bending is 10772.68 N/mm² in the tangential direction and 12985.29 N/mm² in the radial direction; dynamic (Shock) bending strength, 37.05 kJ/m² in tangential direction, 38.80 kJ/m² in radial direction; The screw holding capacity was determined to be 29.03 N/mm² on the tangential surface and 30.45 N/mm² on the radial surface. According to these values obtained, it was determined that there was no significant difference between the tangential and radial surfaces of the limba wood, especially in screwing operations and against dynamic loads. When it comes to exposure to static loads, there is a significant difference between the tangential and radial directions of limba wood, so this difference should be taken into account when limba wood is used.
