EFFECT OF USING NANO SILICA IN POLYPROPYLENE FIBRE MICRO CONCRETES

Abstract

In recent years, the use of nano materials is important in cement-based systems as in all other application areas. This study aims at the simultaneous use of nanomaterials and polypropylene fibers, which have been evaluated in mortar and concrete applications, in micro concretes. The mechanical, physical and microstructural effects of 9 series of micro concrete produced within the scope of the study were investigated. In the mixture designs, 3 different amounts (0, 5, 10 kg /m3) of nano silica and 3 different amounts (0, 1.2, 2.4 kg/m3) of 12 mm long chopped polypropylene fiber were used. The amount of cement used in the reference mix is 625 kg/m3 and the amount of silica fume used in all mixes is 125 kg/m3. A series of physical and mechanical experiments were carried out with 9 series of micro concretes produced and matured with lime saturated water curing. In addition, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectrum analysis were performed on samples from 6 series to represent 9 series of micro concrete. Accordingly, increasing amount of nano silica does not provide a linear increase in compressive and flexural strength, but the use of 5 kg/m3 nano silica has a positive effect on flexural and compressive strength. In addition, the use of polypropylene fiber increases flexural strength. According to Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy data, increasing amount of nano silica supports more C-S-H formation. In the Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis images, the distribution of the amount of polypropylene fiber in the mixture is evident.
