INVESTIGATION OF SINGLE LAP JOINTS CREATED WITH PLATES PRODUCED IN 3D PRINTER WITH ABS AND PLA MATERIAL

Abstract

Investigating the bonding behavior of 3 dimensional (3D) printed materials is important to expand the usage areas of these products. One of the methods used to investigate adhesion behavior is the single lap joint test method. In this study, polymer plates with a thickness of 3.2 mm and dimensions of 100x25 mm were produced using ABS and PLA filaments with a 3D printer. 25x25 mm sections of the produced boards were placed overlapping each other, and single lap joint connections were created by applying two different adhesives (Araldite 2011, Araldite 2015-1) between them. The mass, hardness and surface roughness values of the single lap joint test samples prepared in this way were measured. A tensile test was applied to the test samples at a speed of 1 mm/min. Tensile test behaviors of single lap joints formed by bonding 3D printed ABS and PLA plates using different epoxy adhesives were investigated. As a result of the study, it was determined that there was an approximately 1.8 % increase in the thickness of the polymer test plate during the firing process in the test samples produced with PLA material. It was determined that adhesive type failure occurred in ABS test samples bonded with Araldite 2011 epoxy adhesive. It was determined that the ABS test samples bonded with Araldite 2011 epoxy adhesive had the lowest tensile strength, while the ABS test samples bonded with Araldite 2015-1 epoxy adhesive had the highest elongation at break. It was determined that the highest tensile strength among all parameters was in PLA test samples.
