APPLICATION OF THE RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY (RSM) TO THE ENRICHMENT OF ESPEY COLEMANITE WASTES BY MICROWAVE
Abstract
In this article, the chemical, thermal, mineralogical and grain size properties of fine (-3 mm), 15.22 % B2O3 containing wastes sent to tailings dams at the Espey concentrator facility in Turkey were determined and the enrichment of boron in the wastes was investigated by applying the microwave method. In the study, residence time in the microwave device and microwave power were selected as independent variables affecting the enrichment of B2O3. For (+0.045) mm grain size, colemanite concentrated B2O3 grade (Y1), concentrated product yield (Y2), waste grade (Y3) and waste yield (Y4) are dependent variables. It was defined as concentrated B2O3 grade (Y5), concentrated product yield (Y6), waste grade (Y7) and waste yield (Y8) for (-0.045) mm grain size. By the statistical design of the experiments and the response surface method, these variables fit quadratic models. To verify the adequacy of the model, variance analysis, ANOVA test and optimization were performed with the design expert 12 package program. As a result of the optimization of 8 models from Y1 to Y8 with grain sizes of (+0.045) mm and (-0.045) mm, 490 watts of microwave power and 35 minutes of residence time in the device were found to be the optimum value.. According to ANOVA analysis of variance, the R2 value of the regression coefficients determined for the validity of the models Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6, Y7, Y8 efficiency were found to be 0.9601, 0.8810, 0.9332, 0.8245, 0.8381, 0.8074, 0.7259 and 0.8825, respectively. This showed that 95% of the experimental values matched those predicted from the model. As a result of the study, the concentrate grade increased to 33.33% of B2O3.
