MICROCODIUM FINDING IN THE HARAMİ FORMATION OUTCROP IN THE SOUTHWEST OF ELAZIĞ, EASTERN TÜRKİYE
Abstract
This study is based on Microcodium findings in two sections, named Mangan Tepe 1 and Mangan Tepe 2, measured in the Harami Formation outcrop at Mangan Tepe, approximately 12 km southwest of Elazığ. The aim is to reveal the age and depositional environment of the sequence by utilizing these findings and the accompanying fossil content. The origin of Microcodium is very controversial, but it was determined that the Microcodium in this study were not transported because they did not have a fragmented structure and were evaluated as the calcification product of plant root cells that developed in the early stage of soil formation during the rise of sediments deposited in the shallow marine environment above the water level. Microcodiums determined in this study were divided into two groups as Type 1 and Type 2. The presence of fossils such as Fissoelphidium operculiferum, Orbitoides sp., Lepidorbitoides sp., rotalidae, miliolidae, textularidae, algae, coral, and bivalve were determined in the sequence containing Microcodium, and according to the benthic foraminifera content, the Maastrichtian age assign to the sequence. It was concluded that the Microcodium-bearing Maastrichtian Harami Formation limestones were deposited in the inner and middle shelf of a shallow marine environment.
