GROUNDWATER FLOW MODELING BASED ON DARCY’S LAW USING AN INTEGRATED AHP–TOPSIS–GIS APPROACH: A CASE STUDY OF BIRECIK, SANLIURFA

Öz

In this study, the groundwater flow characteristics of the Birecik District (Şanlıurfa, Turkey) were investigated based on Darcy’s Law using an integrated GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis framework combining the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and TOPSIS. Conceptual and hydraulic parameters influencing groundwater flow, including hydraulic head, effective head, hydraulic gradient, hydraulic conductivity, and permeability, were defined in accordance with Darcy’s principles. Hydraulic conductivity and soil permeability data were utilized to develop a Darcy-based conceptual groundwater model within a GIS environment. The criteria weights derived from AHP were integrated into the TOPSIS method to evaluate the suitability of Darcy flow conditions. The results indicate that hydraulic gradient, soil texture, and pore structure are the most influential parameters controlling groundwater flow in the study area, with the hydraulic gradient exhibiting the highest AHP weight (34%). Spatial analyses successfully revealed the heterogeneous distribution of hydraulic conductivity and permeability, and the model demonstrated strong performance with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.92. This integrated approach provides a reliable framework for assessing Darcy-based groundwater flow in data-limited regions.
