LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS OF AN EXPANDABLE POLYSTYRENE PRODUCT
Abstract
In the last decade, energy sustainability and efficiency has very
importance for urban especially for buildings. New technologies are improved to
reach maximum energy efficiency. First of all we have to use optimum energy
that I need. In the building, we supply this with insulation system. Last years
special insulation system usage have been increased for building’s outer
surface. Expandable polystyrene (EPS) blocks are used for this purpose.
Expandable polystyrene is produced with suspension polymerization reaction. It
has very sensitive and complex batch production process. After that reaction,
formed beads are coated and packaged. And this packaged EPS are send to
customer to produce EPS blocks. EPS blocks are produced 3 stage. First one is
pre expanding and maturing stage. In this stage the steam are applied on the
EPS beads and allowed blowing. And then these blowed beads are taken to the
maturing silos for a certain time. Second one is blocking stage. In this stage,
matured and blowed beads are taken to block machine and applied steam on again.
Beads are fused each other and composed block in the machine under high
temperature and pressure. Third stage are resting and cutting process. After
than this EPS blocks are applied on building surface to make good insulation.
Landfilling, recycle(reusing) and recovery (incinerating) are evaluation
methods of EPS wastes. During this all period we use too much energy and
chemicals also they have very adverse effect on environment. In this study, we
aim that decrease environmental impact of each step of EPS life cycle with
using Cradle to Grave Life Cycle Analysis. Lıfe Cycle Analysis is very useful
methods to realize the detailed environmental impact of whole process. This
analysis are composed from 3 step. First step is definition of goal and scope.
Second is inventory analysis. Third step is evaluation of environmental impact
and the last step is giving decision and applyig protection process. As a
result, in this study, we will find the most energy consumption step during EPS
life cycle with using Life Cycle Analysis. And than we will improve solution to decrease these
consumptions as soon as possible for defined steps.
