ESTABLISHMENT OF EFFICIENCY MONITORING SYSTEM IN TURBINE-GENERATOR UNIT IN HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANTS-CASE STUDY
Abstract
In hydroelectric power plants, the place where the most efficiency loss occurs is the turbine. The reasons and rates of these losses vary depending on the characteristics of the power plants and even the turbine-generator units. Determining the efficiency loss in turbines, performing predictive maintenance or optimization studies in a timely and accurate manner depends on knowing the current status of the turbine. In this study, a real-time flow and efficiency monitoring system was installed in a turbine-generator unit belonging to Alpaslan-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant for instantaneous calculation of turbine efficiency. Flow measurement and absolute tests, which are turbine performance tests, were performed with the dye dilution method. The Winter-Kennedy flow constant was found with the measured flow value and thus, index tests, which are another performance test, were performed using the Winter-Kennedy method. In addition, power plant, unit and generator efficiencies were also calculated in the tests. In the tests performed using the efficiency monitoring system, it was observed that there was a 3.5% decrease in turbine efficiency. The system, which was finally set to calculate instantaneous flow and instantaneous efficiency using the Winter-Kennedy method, was left in operation.
