Öz

AISI 5115 steel is a type of hardened low-alloy steel widely used in machinery due to its strength and wear resistance. Machining of such case-hardened materials presents challenges due to high cutting forces, tool wear, and low surface quality issues resulting from hardness. Therefore, the selection of the cutting medium is critical at this point, and near-dry or MQL method in particular has come to the forefront in recent years with its environmental advantages and increased energy efficiency. This study experimentally investigates the influences of MQL and dry environment conditions on surface roughness, cutting forces, and energy consumption during the turning of hardened AISI 5115 steels. Turning conditions are dry, and MQL used vegetable based oil. It was determined that the MQL application reduces surface roughness, provides higher quality surfaces, reduces cutting forces, and optimizes energy consumption. The novelty of this study is a comprehensive analysis of the environmental and machinability factors of the 5115 alloy steel by including energy consumption, cutting forces, and surface quality.
